CANDIDATE STATEMENT:

My name is Michael Scafiddi and I am a candidate for the Office of Board of Trustees for District Four. I have been practicing criminal law and personal injury since 1997. I started my practice as a solo practitioner and we have grown to a firm with five attorneys and six staff members. Five percent of our practice is dedicated to pro bono work. I was the recipient of the Kearney-Nydum award for providing pro bono services in 2010. My office is located in San Bernardino; however, I serve clients in San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego and Imperial Counties.

I have been very active in the Inland Empire legal community. For fourteen years, I have served on the Board of Directors for The Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino; the past six years as the vice president. I have also served as an officer for the San Bernardino County Bar Association from 2004-2010. In 2008, I was the president of the Bar Association. During that term, I initiated the “We Care Program” to encourage local lawyers to give back to the community through pro bono services and monetary donations. This very successful program continues to advance our profession. I am currently a member of the San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego and Western San Bernardino County Bar Associations. I am also a member of the National Conference of Bar Presidents (Sustaining Fellow Bar Leader). I also serve in leadership roles for several local not for profit agencies.

Having a practice that brings me to many courthouses in our district, I have had the opportunity to discuss concerns with local lawyers. A few of the general concerns that I would like to help tackle include:

  1. Additional local Bench Officers
  2. Improved court facilities allowing better access to justice for all our clients.
  3. Increased interaction between veteran attorneys and new attorneys utilizing standardized mentoring programs.

In 2011, I was a candidate for the former Board of Governors position and finished second with nearly 800 votes. Local bar members need a voice at the state level. We can’t sit idly by and voice concerns unless we get involved. As a member of the Board of Trustees for District Four, I will take each of your concerns and thoughts and advocate for those positions that are important to the members.

I personally believe that lawyers are the leaders of our communities and we need to take a greater role in providing our clients access to true justice and the State Bar needs to provide resources to assist us in achieving that goal. If elected, I will work tirelessly on behalf of all lawyers in District Four.

I possess the vision, strength, passion, integrity and energy to provide the attorneys of District Four a voice at the State Bar level. I will travel as needed to connect with members in all counties and use technology as an adjunct to promote communication.

I would appreciate your support for my candidacy.
