CYLA is the nation's largest association of young lawyers. A young lawyer has been in practice for one to five years or is 36 years old or younger.

How do I become a member of CYLA?

All California attorneys who are in their first five years of practice or are 36 years of age or younger are AUTOMATICALLY members of CYLA. No separate membership fee is required. Membership in CYLA is a benefit provided as a result of your status as a newer member of the State Bar of California.

What is CYLA?

The State Bar's Conference of Barristers was created in 1965 by the State Bar's Board of Governors. The name was changed to the California Young Lawyers Association (CYLA) in 1977-78.

The Board of Directors of CYLA is one of the governing bodies of the State Bar of California. CYLA holds a permanent seat on the State Bar Board of Governors and has a history of zealously advocating issues important to its membership before the Board of Governors. CYLA offers lawyers and new practitioners the best opportunity for involvement in our profession and for participating in public service at the state and local levels.

If you want to learn about current State Bar of California policies the CYLA Board of Directors is working on, you may contact the CYLA Board of Directors District Representative in your area.
