In 2008, the State Bar Annual Meeting returns to exquisite Monterey, offering opportunities for fun for the whole family. Program 174 Bias, Diversity and Cultural Expectations in the Legal Profession

An interactive program that examines the biases which attorneys, judges, and ADR neutrals hold in the legal profession, and related ethical issues. Program 184 Cross-Border Mergers and Acquisitions: Anatomy of an International Transaction

Covers recent developments in cross-border mergers and acquisitions practice, structuring strategies, and transaction management. Learn best practices in cross-border due diligence and working with local foreign counsel in multijurisdictional transactions.

Signing of the Agreement with the Dai-Ichi Toky Bar ASsociationInternational Law Section Expanding Relationships With Overseas Law Societies: One of the priorities of the International Law Section is to develop relationships with overseas law societies and bar associations, with a view to providing benefits for our members. Such benefits may include possibilities of obtaining referral work, providing or going on an internship, dissemination of articles, or provision of office facilities when traveling overseas.

Recently, the officers of the Section hosted meetings at the State Bar offices in San Francisco and signed Friendship Agreements with the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association and the Law Council of Australia. For more information, see Relationships With Overseas Law Societies.


Law Student Writing Competition

The International Law Section is please to announce its Second Annual Law Student Writing Competition!

Deadline: November 1, 2008

First Place Prize: $2,000.00
Second Place Prize: $750.00
Third Place Prize: $250.00

All winning articles will be submitted for publication to the The California International Law Journal. For more information, see Writing Competition or contact Dena Cruz.

The Section congratulates the winners of its First Annual Law Student Writing Competition. Some of the winning articles will appear in the California International Law Journal. The winners and winning articles are:

  • First Place: Benjamin Brockman Hawe, "The Iraqi High Court; A Retrospective and Prospective View" ($2,000 prize)
  • Second Place: Sapana Shah, "Islamic Banking and Finance: Shari 'a -Compliance and the Reinterpretation of Riba" ($750 prize)
  • Third Place: Jesse Chui, "Legal Reform in Japan at the Dawn of the 21st Century" ($250 prize)

This is a great benefit for all Section members as the savings on even a single purchase could be equal to or even exceed the cost of an annual Section membership.
