ABOUT THE TAXATION SECTION

The Taxation Section is California's only statewide tax bar association. The Taxation Section's current membership is approximately 3,000, and we invite you to join us. The Section accepts attorneys from other states and non-attorneys as Associate Members. Associate Members include accountants, financial planners, pension and trust administrators, actuaries, tax executives, federal, state and local tax administrators, educators, other tax specialists, and law students. The Taxation Section has local committees (the Young Tax Lawyers Committees) throughout California established especially for tax practitioners with less than 10 years of practice experience.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND ANNUAL MEETING

The Taxation Section sponsors many educational programs on timely topics presented by leading practitioners at a reasonable cost. The subjects range from broad overviews to highly technical discussions of pressing tax problems.

The Taxation Section presents programs at the State Bar Annual Meeting, the Annual Section Education Institute, the Annual Meeting of the California Tax Bars and many programs sponsored by its Committees.

The Annual Meeting of the California Tax Bars a is a weekend-long gathering of California tax professionals, which each year has provided over 30 seminar programs sponsored by Committees that cover the entire range of income, state and local, procedural, criminal, gift, estate and international tax issues. The seminars typically include a discussion of the California tax treatment of the subject (if not already the primary focus) and provide opportunities in an informal setting to talk one-on-one with leading tax practitioners and key government officials.

GOVERNMENT LIAISONS

The Taxation Section provides wide access to governmental officials. It coordinates an annual trip to Washington D.C. with the Los Angeles County Bar Association. The Washington D.C. delegation historically has presented approximately a dozen paper topics each year on substantive and procedural tax issues to high-ranking personnel of the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Treasury Department, U.S. Congressional committees and the Tax Court. The Taxation Section also arranges an annual weekend retreat among high-ranking California tax officials and selected private practitioners, known as Eagles Lodge West, to resolve broad or particularly problematic California tax issues. Additionally, Federal and California government officials serve as advisors to, and actively participate as members of the Taxation Section.

CAliFORNIA TAX LAWYER

The Taxation Section publishes California Tax Lawyer, a quarterly journal that features articles and reports on topical issues of federal, state and local tax legislation, regulations and decisions, activities and programs of local bar associations, programs of the Taxation Section and its Committees, and other valuable information.

COMMITTEES

The Taxation Section functions largely through its Committees. Committees address tax issues related to specific tax topics and tax practitioners. The Committees plan programs, prepare position papers, and communicate with their members through email, meetings, newsletters and conference calls. Tax Section members can sign up for a committee using the Committee Sign-Up Form. For more information, contact the Standing Committee Chairs.
