CONTEST RULES

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for consideration, the paper must relate to intellectual property law (e.g., copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, privacy, right of publicity) and have been written solely by a student (or students) who, at the time the paper was written, was either:

  • A permanent resident of California in full-time (day or evening) attendance at any law school in the United States; or
  • A non-California resident in full-time (day or evening) attendance at a California law school.

SUBMISSION

Submit five (5) copies of the paper to: The Intellectual Property Section, State Bar of California, 180 Howard Street, San Francisco, California 94105. Papers must be postmarked on or before February 1. Please include a cover letter verifying your eligibility and authorizing the Section to publish your paper in New Matter if it is declared the winner. Papers must be no longer than twenty-five (25) typed, double-spaced (8 1/2 " x 11”) pages, including notes and appendices.

JUDGING

The papers will be judged on the following criteria: contribution to the practice of intellectual property law, topicality, originality and creativity, and presentation of information not previously published or available. The decision of the judges is final. Papers must be of publishable quality, and the Section reserves the right not to award any prizes, if, in the sole opinion of the judges, none of the papers are of publishable quality or meet the standards set forth above.
