Privacy
We do not collect personal information about you unless you choose
to provide that information to us or you choose a service on this
Web site where gathering personal information is necessary to
deliver the specific services. But use of those services is
entirely voluntary.
During your visit to the State Bar of California’s
(“State Bar”) Web site, our Web server automatically
gathers and stores certain information about your use of the
site. This information does not personally identify you, and
your e-mail address is not collected in this automatic process. The
information that is automatically collected and stored is:
- Your Internet domain and Internet Protocol address.
- The type of browser and operating system you used to access our
site.
- The date and time of your visit to our site.
- The Web pages or services you accessed at this site.
- The IP address of the Web site from which you came to this
site.
- The Web site to which you go when you leave this site.
- If you downloaded a form, the form that was downloaded.
We use this information to evaluate and improve the content of
our site and to make our site more useful to our visitors. We also
use it to diagnose problems with our server, to keep our server
running smoothly, and to learn about the number of visitors to our
site and the types of technology they use. This information does
not identify or track you personally.
The State Bar makes every attempt to avoid the use of
“cookies,” the simple text files stored on your
computer by your Web browser. Cookies may be used on our site when
needed to maintain the functionality of an interactive application
and is used only during the session in which you access the
interactive application. Cookies created on your computer by
using this Web site do not contain personal information and do not
compromise your privacy or security.
The cookie feature is used only to store a randomly generated
identifying temporary tag on your computer. You can refuse the
cookie or delete the cookie file from your computer by using any of
the widely available methods. However, if you turn off your cookie
option, you may not be able to access some of the features in our
interactive applications.
The State Bar’s Web site contains links to third party
sites and advertisers. The State Bar is not responsible for
the use of cookies, the privacy policies or the content of those
sites.
My State Bar Profile
Members of the State Bar are required by law to maintain a current
office address and telephone number, or other address to be used
for State Bar purposes, on the official membership records of the
State Bar.
A member who has registered online and created a
My State Bar Profile account may use the account to
change his or her address of record. A member’s address of
record is public information and is used for regulatory purposes of
the State Bar.
The State Bar may also provide State Bar members’ names
and postal addresses to select outside entities so that State Bar
members receive information or promotional materials by mail that
may interest them.
Some pages provide you with an opportunity to order products,
make requests, and register to receive materials and/or
services. The types of personal information collected on
these pages may include:
- Business Name
- Contact Name
- Address, City, State and Zip
- E-mail Address
- Phone Number
- Fax Number
- Business Type
- Credit/Debit Card Information
This information is passed on to the applicable third-party
provider, but a copy of this material is maintained by the State
Bar’s third-party marketing administrator, solely for use by
the State Bar.
You are solely responsible for all use of the Web Site under
your password or through your account. Upon creation of a My
State Bar Profile, you may receive an account name and
password.
If you lose your password or suspect unauthorized use of your
account, your must inform the State Bar immediately. The State Bar
will not be liable for any loss or damage resulting from your
failure to safeguard your password and account.
How We Use State Bar Members’ Personal
Information
Financial Information
Since features exist on the State Bar’s Web site that enable
or will enable visitors to make purchases, receive services and/or
register for events online using their credit/debit card, the
financial information collected by the State Bar during these
transactions is used solely by the State Bar or State Bar vendors
who collect this information for the State Bar. This
information is not shared with outside parties except for the
purposes of finalizing the transaction. This information is
not used for any other purpose whatsoever. The State Bar is
further committed to protecting the security of your personal
financial information, and has in place various security measures
to safeguard this information from unauthorized access, use, and/or
disclosure. Once a transaction is completed, the State Bar
purges the financial information used to facilitate or consummate
the transaction.
Additional Information
A member’s address of record is public information and is
used for regulatory purposes of the State Bar.
Except for credit/debit card and other financial information
provided, the State Bar further reserves the right to use personal
information provided in connection with CalBar
Connect, a members-only Web site for attorneys to link to
affinity partners who are offering value-added products to
California lawyers.
The State Bar may provide members’ names, business types,
postal and e-mail addresses, and phone and fax numbers to these
select outside entities affiliated with this program so that State
Bar members may receive information or promotional materials that
may interest them.
The State Bar’s Membership List Policy permits member
names to be provided (at cost) to a restricted list of outside
entities that meet certain criteria. The names are provided
for State Bar-sponsored member benefits, such as attorney insurance
program offerings, MCLE provider programs, State Bar member
affinity sponsors, Foundation of the State Bar programs, local bar
programs and a variety of professional discounts.
The State Bar protects its member list to ensure that
information is used specifically to serve its members’
interests. The select outside affiliates of the State Bar
must agree to use personal information based on the State
Bar’s instructions, and in compliance with this Policy and
any other applicable law, confidentiality and security
provision.
The Opportunity to Opt-Out
Attorneys who wish to remove their name from The State Bar of
California Promotional Membership List may do so at any time by
logging onto Member Login on the home page of the State Bar’s
Web site, www.calbar.ca.gov.
After registering with My State Bar Profile, go to
“Change my address, phone numbers, and opt out
preference.” A State Bar member also may remove his or
her name from this list by sending a request to memrec@calbar.ca.gov (include
your bar number), or request an opt-out form by calling the Member
Services Center, 1-888-800-3400 or 415-538-2225.
State Bar members who choose to opt out will not receive
mailings about State Bar-sponsored member benefits. The State
Bar makes best efforts to communicate an opt-out request to its
affiliates in a timely fashion. Please note, there may be
some period of delay between the time a member chooses to opt-out
and the completion of the opt-out request.
A State Bar member’s election to opt-out is effective for
a period of at least five years, beginning when the member’s
opt-out election is received and implemented, unless the member
subsequently revokes the opt-out in writing or
electronically. Once that period expires, the member will
receive a renewal notice that allows the member to continue to
limit marketing offers from the State Bar’s affiliates for
another five years.
My Law Student Profile
A law student who has created a
My Law Student Profile account may use the account to
change his or her e-mail address of record, or remove his or her
name from the State Bar’s My Law Student Profile
database.
Simply login to your personal My Law Student Profile,
then go to “Change My Law Student Profile
Information.”
You are solely responsible for all use of the Web Site under
your password or through your account. Upon creation of a My State
Bar Profile, you may receive an account name and password.

account, your must inform the State Bar immediately. The State Bar

How We Use Law Students’ Personal
Information
The State Bar may provide law students’ names, e-mail
addresses, current law school and expected graduation date to
select outside entities so that My Law Student Profile
users may receive information or promotional materials by e-mail
that may interest them. By creating your own My Law Student
Profile on the State Bar’s Web site, you agree to
receive electronic mailings from the State Bar, local bar
associations, and other select companies offering promotional
information and benefits.
The State Bar protects its law students’ list to ensure
that information is used specifically to serve law students’
interests. The select outside affiliates of the State Bar
must agree to use personal information based on the State
Bar’s instructions, and in compliance with this Policy and
any other applicable law, confidentiality and security
provision.
The Opportunity to Opt-Out
Law students who wish to remove their name from The State Bar of
California Promotional Membership List may do so at any time by
logging onto My Law Student Profile, then go to
“Change My Law Student Profile Information”
[https://lawstudents.calbar.ca.gov/login.aspx]. A law student
also may remove his or her name from the State Bar’s law
student database by sending a request to feedback@calbar.ca.gov.
A law student’s election to opt-out is effective for a
period of at least five years, beginning when the law
student’s opt-out election is received and implemented,
unless the law student subsequently revokes the opt-out in writing
or electronically.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Law students must register with
the Committee of Bar Examiners within 90 days of beginning the
study of law (Business & Professions Code
section 6060(d)). Registration information can be found on the
State Bar’s Web site. Creating a My Law Student
Profile does not fulfill a law student’s obligation to
register with the Committee of Bar Examiners.
Additional Uses of Information Applicable to Members and
Law Students
As Required by Law, Good Faith, or Exigent
Circumstances
The State Bar reserves the right to access, use, preserve, or
disclose personal information as required by law or in the good
faith belief that such action is reasonably necessary to:
(a) comply with the law or legal process served on the State Bar
or the State Bar Web site;
(b) protect and defend the rights, interests or property of the
State Bar, its respective employees, marketing partners, agents or
third parties; or
(c) to protect the personal safety of State Bar members or members
of the public in general.
Where applicable, the State Bar may also use information
obtained on its site for the purpose of investigating and
prosecuting attorney ethical violations.
If You Send Us e-mail
If you choose to send us an e-mail that includes personal
information, normally we will use the information provided only to
respond to your message and for no other purposes. Sometimes we may
forward your e-mail to a different agency that may be better able
to help you. We do not use the information to create personal
profiles, or give it to others for commercial use or other purposes
without your consent.
Please note, communications you send to the State Bar are not
confidential or protected by any professional privilege or
relationship. And, if you send us a threat or message that
describes or promotes unlawful activity, the State Bar reserves the
right to share such threat or message with law enforcement
authorities.
