The deadline to apply to a council position has been extended to March 31.
The State Bar Council on Access and Fairness is seeking applications for the 2018-2019 committee year. The council advises the Board of Trustees on advancing State Bar diversity strategies and goals. The "diversity pipeline" captures the need to include all parts of the California community in the pipeline of talent that supports our legal system. It extends to early education, pre-K to 12; college, law school and bar exam prep; recruitment, hiring, retention and promotion in the profession; and judicial diversity. The judiciary is required at every step to achieve the diverse and inclusive legal system California must have.
The 25-member council serves as the State Bar Diversity "think tank" and consists of judges, lawyers and public members from diverse practice settings and constituencies. The council seeks new members who have experience that represents the full spectrum of the diversity pipeline. New members are expected to have the ability to engage in strategic visioning towards fulfilling the council's mission and goals.
COAF focuses on initiatives in the four diversity areas along the pipeline including: Early Education Pipeline; College/Law School/Bar Exam; Legal Profession (e.g. recruitment, hiring, retention and promotion); and the Judiciary. COAF will consider the qualifications of all applicants in light of its current needs for expertise in these specific aspects of its work.
