Bernard E. Witkin Medal
About the 2013 medal recipient:
This year’s Bernard E. Witkin Medal recipient, Carlos Moreno, is a state Supreme Court justice who has a long legal career as an attorney and a member of the judiciary. From his early days as a Los Angeles deputy city attorney to his years as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of California, to his nomination as ambassador to Belize, Justice Carlos Moreno has had a remarkable career.
After graduating from Stanford Law School in 1975, Justice Moreno began his legal career prosecuting criminal and civil consumer protection cases with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office. By 1986, he embarked what would be 25 years of service to the judiciary with an appointment to municipal court in Los Angeles.
Nominated by then President Bill Clinton, Moreno moved to the federal bench in 1998, serving as United States District Court judge for the Central District of California for three years. In 2001, Moreno was sworn in as an associate justice of the California Supreme Court. During his 10 years on the court, Moreno authored 144 majority opinions, making key judicial contributions to many areas of the law including arbitration, class action and custody matters involving same sex couples.
Justice Moreno’s outstanding achievements have earned him numerous awards, including the American Bar Association’s Spirit Award for his efforts to promote diversity in the legal profession. Today we honor him once again for his outstanding achievements.
The Witkin medal was first awarded in 1993 to recognize a member of the legal community who has helped to shape the legal landscape through their extraordinary body of work. The next year, the State Bar's Board of Trustees created a five-person panel to name a recipient of the award each year. It is always awarded at the bar's annual meeting.
