Carlos MorenoThis year’s Bernard E. Witkin Medal recipient, Erwin Chemerinsky, is Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law, and Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law, at the University of California, Irvine School of Law.

Dean Chemerinsky is widely recognized as one of the nation’s top experts in constitutional law, federal practice, civil rights and civil liberties, and appellate litigation.

He is the author of eight books, the latest being "The Case Against the Supreme Court." He has also written more than 200 scholarly articles in the nation’s top law reviews and journals.

A graduate of Northwestern University and Harvard Law School, Dean Chemerinsky is the founding dean of UC Irvine School of Law, which was inaugurated in 2009. UC Irvine is the first public law school in California in more than 40 years and has been on the forefront of practical skills training and clinical education.

Dean Chemerinsky is also a committed lawyer who has argued five cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and numerous cases in federal and state courts. And he writes and speaks persuasively on key legal issues in local and national media.

The Witkin Medal is named for the preeminent legal scholar and writer Bernard E. Witkin, who was its first recipient in 1993. It is annually awarded to a member of the legal community who has helped shape the legal landscape through an extraordinary body of work.
