Lawyer Assistance Program Offerings

The Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP) provides free, virtual programs designed to help California legal professionals, bar applicants, and law students strengthen wellness, resilience, and practical skills for thriving in the legal profession. Our offerings combine mental health strategies with tools for competent, ethical practice.

Refresh: Mindfulness Series

Mindfulness is the intentional practice of paying attention to the present moment with openness and without judgment. For attorneys, this means cultivating awareness of thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations as they arise, rather than reacting automatically or becoming overwhelmed by stressors. Mindfulness is both a wellness tool and a professional skill that enhances mental health; sharpens cognitive performance; and supports competent, ethical lawyering.

Practicing mindfulness supports attorney wellness by:

  • Reducing stress and anxiety: Mindfulness helps calm the nervous system, lowering stress levels common in high-pressure legal environments.
  • Enhancing emotional regulation: Attorneys can respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively, improving resilience and mental health.
  • Preventing burnout: By fostering self-awareness and balance, mindfulness promotes sustainable work habits and overall well-being.

Refocus: ADHD Strategies for Success in Law

Research from the American Bar Association highlights a striking statistic: 12.5 percent of attorneys report having ADHD, compared to just 4–8 percent of adults in the general population. This underscores the importance of practical strategies to help legal professionals with ADHD, or ADHD-like symptoms, thrive and practice law competently.

The Refocus program is designed for California attorneys, law students, and bar applicants seeking tools to strengthen executive functioning skills essential for success in the legal profession. The program not only provides actionable strategies, resources, and techniques for managing attention and organization but also celebrates the unique strengths and perspectives of neurodiverse individuals. Each session offers practical guidance to help participants enhance focus, improve productivity, and navigate the varied demands of legal practice with confidence.
