About Us

The State Bar of California is a regulatory agency with a public protection mission that includes the primary functions of licensing, regulation and discipline of attorneys; the advancement of the ethical and competent practice of law; and supporting efforts for greater access to, and inclusion in, the legal system. The agency provides many resources for members of the public, legal professionals, and applicants who want to practice law in California.

The State Bar is governed by its Board of Trustees, who establishes the organization’s strategic direction and ensures it is fulfilling its statutory mission.
