Legal Education Evaluation

To ensure you meet the legal education requirements pursuant to Business and Professions Code section 6060 and the Rules of the State Bar, you may submit a Legal Evaluation Request through the Applicant Portal after you have registered with the State Bar. 

This evaluation will determine:

  • Your eligibility for the First-Year Law Students’ Examination;
  • If you are exempt from the First-Year Law Students’ Examination;
  • The amount of credit you will receive for your completed law studies; and
  • Any additional law study required to qualify for the California Bar Examination.

Submitting a Legal Evaluation Request

To request a Legal Evaluation, submit the following through the Applicant Portal:

  • Completed Legal Evaluation Request form;
  • Required fee payment;
  • Official or certified law school transcripts for all law studies completed to date, sealed in an envelope by your school; and a
  • Proposed plan of legal study, if applicable.

Your law school or prospective law school can also submit a Legal Evaluation Request on your behalf.

The Legal Education Evaluation process generally takes three to four weeks to complete.
