Email Safelisting Tips for Attorneys

Attorneys, please help ensure that you receive important emails in a timely manner by completing the following steps:

  • Verify that your email address is up to date in My State Bar Profile. Learn how you can make updates to your attorney record.
  • Safelist emails from calbar.ca.gov, DOR@calbar.ca.gov, DORnoreply@calbar.ca.gov, and calbar.org.
  • Periodically check your spam/junk folder for incorrectly flagged emails.
  • Gmail users, please see instructions below to create a filter and optionally move these messages to your primary inbox.
  • Instruction links are also available for users of Hotmail and Outlook and for Yahoo users.
  • The safelisting process varies by email platform. Further resources are widely available on the Internet.

Please note: You are responsible for making sure you receive our emails and letters. By law, you must keep your contact information up to date. Learn how you can update your contact information in your attorney record.

Gmail users

Add the email address you want to safelist to your contact list. Next, create a custom Gmail filter: Click the gear icon; select See all settings; then in the top horizontal menu, select Filters and Blocked Addresses. On the next screen, select Create a new filter.

Add the email address you’d like to safelist in the “From” field, then click Create filter.

On the next screen, select Never send it to Spam. (Optional: Select Always mark it as important.)

To ensure emails from this address go to your primary inbox: Select Categorize as and select Primary from the dropdown menu. Then click the blue button to Create filter.

Repeat these steps for each email address you want to safelist.
