Raymond Buenaventura is an attorney member of the State Bar of California Board of Trustees, appointed by the California Supreme Court in 2023.

Mr. Buenaventura is the founder of the Buenaventura Law Firm in San Francisco. He has 30 years of experience in indigent criminal defense, representing clients in misdemeanor, felony, and juvenile cases. Mr. Buenaventura also has experience representing clients in immigration litigation, medical practice, and personal injury. He is certified by the State Bar as a criminal law specialist who also has a death penalty qualification.

Mr. Buenaventura currently serves as Monterey County’s Chief Public Defender and formerly served as Lake County’s Chief Public Defender and as Mayor for Daly City. He has served as a pro bono (volunteer) attorney through the San Francisco Bar Association, the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Children, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, the Eviction Defense Collaborative, and several homeless shelters. A past member of the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs, he has had long involvement in local and affinity bar associations. In 2013, he received the Filipino Bar Association of Northern California’s Jose Rizal Award for outstanding service.

Mr. Buenaventura’s previous service to the State Bar has included serving on the State Bar’s Criminal Law Advisory Committee and the Ad Hoc Commission on the Discipline System.

Mr. Buenaventura received his law degree from Whittier Law School and his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley.
