Purpose

A practice analysis is generally the first step in setting the foundation for validating licensure exams. The California Attorney Practice Analysis provided California-specific and current information regarding the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed by entry-level attorneys.

To provide oversight and guidance for the study, a working group was created with nominations from various stakeholders, at both the state and national levels. Working group members were appointed by the California Supreme Court in October 2018.

The working group provided guidance, feedback, and oversight for the project with respect to:

  • Scope
  • Key research questions and policy issues to be addressed
  • Research methodologies for data collection and analysis
  • Decisions on major project milestones
