Who Must Report MCLE Compliance

If you are an attorney who practices law in California, you must submit a report to the State Bar showing that you have completed at least 25 hours of Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) every three years.

The MCLE reporting requirement covers attorneys who are:

  • On active status, even if you are retired and not practicing law
  • Are on “not eligible” status because they have been suspended for disciplinary reasons or for not paying fees
  • Are exempt for all of the reporting period
You must still file a report, but you do not have to complete any training.
  • Are exempt for part of the reporting period
Attorneys who are exempt for only part of the period must complete a reduced amount of MCLE as well as report their hours. See the amount of reduced credits you need to report.

Inactive attorneys do not have to take legal education courses or report their hours to the State Bar.
