State Bar of California Proposes New Discipline Case Processing Standards

The State Bar of California today submitted to the Legislative Analyst’s Office and legislative leaders a report proposing new discipline case processing standards. The report, required by Senate Bill 211 (last year’s fee bill) proposes shorter timelines than current averages, while differentiating timelines by case complexity and types of cases, prioritizing those that pose a greater risk to the public.  

State Bar Announces Investigations of Mark Geragos and Brian Kabateck

The State Bar of California’s Board of Trustees Chair Ruben Duran announced today that the State Bar is investigating attorneys Mark John Geragos (State Bar No. 108325) and Brian Stephen Kabateck (State Bar No. 152054) in connection with the Armenian Genocide insurance settlement funds from which dispersals were made in the U.S. and France.

State Bar Announces Additional Investigation into Handling of Past Complaints Against Thomas Girardi

The State Bar of California's Board of Trustees announced today that it has been conducting an additional investigation into whether the State Bar's handling of past discipline complaints against former licensee Thomas V. Girardi was affected by Girardi’s connections to or influence at the State Bar.The investigation is intended to identify actions by anyone with ties to the State Bar that may constitute malfeasance in how discipline complaints against Girardi were handled.  

State Bar Board of Trustees Targets Client Trust Account Regulation and Other Measures to Improve the Discipline System

At its July 23 meeting, the State Bar Board of Trustees took significant steps to strengthen the discipline system, establishing a special committee—the Committee on the Special Discipline Case Audit—to further analyze the audit report on closed discipline complaints against Thomas Girardi and propose a comprehensive corrective action plan.
