How do I post more than one picture?

We can accommodate only one passport-type photo within your profile on the State Bar's website, which you can update as needed. However, including a link to your firm's website will give you the opportunity to provide additional information.

What qualifies as "Language(s) Spoken"?

List any languages, besides English, in which you, or your staff, are fluent enough to communicate with clients on legal matters.

What if I do not provide any additional information to expand my profile, but I still want to come up in randomized search results for potential new clients?

Unless you opt out of this feature, you will automatically come up in randomized search results when the search criteria match. So, if the search criteria are limited to geography, you will still be included (as long as you are on Active status).

If I opt out of being part of randomized search results for potential new clients, will my existing clients still be able to find my profile online?

Yes, anyone searching for you by name or with your bar number will be able to find your profile.

What if I want to expand my profile, but I don't want to appear in randomized search results for potential clients?

No problem. These are two separate options and you can change your option at any time. It is understandable that some attorneys, such as in-house counsel or government attorneys, may want to expand their profile, but would not want to be included in randomized attorney search results (which are generally geared towards members of the public seeking representation).

What is an "expanded" profile and what are its advantages?

Expanding your profile allows you to add information such as a photo of yourself, languages spoken in your law office, areas of practice and a link to your (or law firm's) website.

What is the Advanced Attorney Search feature?

The Advanced Attorney Search is a feature which can be:

  • helpful in finding a particular attorney when a person doesn't know the attorney's exact name or bar number.
  • used by potential new clients who are seeking representation and would like to search for attorneys that meet some basic criteria.

Am I guaranteed that the attorney I contact will take my case?

The State Bar of California is not an attorney referral service. The online directory is informational and there is no guarantee that the lawyer contacted will agree to take your case. An attorney’s decision of whether or not to take a case is a matter between you and the attorney. The State Bar has no influence over that process.
