Is my out-of-state/country CLE acceptable in California?

You may apply the MCLE credit from courses approved by many states and a few overseas jurisdictions if you were physically outside California when you completed them. This is by rule, so no special forms or requests are needed. Check the approved jurisdictions list on the State Bar website.

What is the deadline to request testing accommodations?

A Testing Accommodations Application must be completed and received by the State Bar no later than the following:

• January 1 for the February California Bar Examination;

• June 1 for the July California Bar Examination;

• May 15 for the June First-Year Law Students’ Examination; or

• September 15 for the October First-Year Law Students’ Examination.

I don’t have any certificates for my self-study courses. How do I report those hours?

All of the hours taken, whether participatory or self-study must be logged on the Online Summary Log.  The activities reported must be approved self-study activities.

What if I don’t pass the exam?

If you fail the exam, the course will allow you to click “Retry” to retake the exam. You may retake the exam as many times as needed until you obtain a passing score. Because you must complete all lessons before reaching the Final Assessment, each lesson will be unlocked and available for review.

A failing score will allow you to review which questions you answered incorrectly. It is advisable to take your time and use the navigation menu to review the lesson covering that topic before retaking the Final Assessment.

How do I get proof of completion for courses I took through the State Bar of California?

You may sign into your My State Bar Profile page and navigate to the E-Learning Portal. Each MCLE course will offer a PDF-formatted certificate you may print or save, provided the courses haven’t expired. The State Bar only offers courses through the E-Learning Portal.

Please note we do not require copies of certificates for expired courses. We will have internal record of the courses you have completed via the E-Learning Portal as the direct provider. Also, the Portal will always have record of the courses you have completed, and you may view the list at any time.

My request for testing accommodations was denied or only partially approved. What are my options?

If a testing accommodations application is denied in whole or in part, applicants may request review of the decision by the Committee of Bar Examiners once for each exam cycle. However, if you submit your initial application less than 60 days before the filing deadline, there may not be enough time after receiving a decision to appeal for the upcoming administration of the exam. Requests for review must be submitted through the Applicant Portal no later than the first business day of the month in which that exam is scheduled to be administered. Launch a case via the Applicant Portal by clicking the Request for Review link on the right side of the page, under the column labeled Application Action Link. You must complete the required questions, including a statement of the reason you do not agree with the initial determination, and upload any documentation you wish for the committee to consider.

Are there other MCLE courses available through the State Bar?

Yes. The State Bar offers additional MCLE courses. For course listings, browse the E-Learning Portal catalog, where all State Bar courses are now available. If you are a California-licensed attorney or registered in the multijurisdictional practice (MJP) program, log in to My State Bar Profile to access the catalog.

My Testing Accommodations Application is still pending review. Am I still able to register for an exam?

Yes. The process for requesting testing accommodations is separate from the application to take an exam. You are not required to wait for a determination regarding your testing accommodations to register for an exam, and doing so is not recommended.

Can I get a refund after purchasing the course?

You may request a refund within 60 days of your purchase as long as the course has not been accessed. Refunds for courses with technical issues will be prioritized. Processing may take up to 90 days. Credit card fees are nonrefundable. To request a refund, email elearning@calbar.ca.gov. Please provide your name, your bar number, the name of the course you are requesting a refund for, the reason for the refund request, the date of purchase, and a copy of the transaction receipt.

May I submit a certificate with someone else’s name on it if we took the course together?

You may only submit unaltered certificates from the official approved provider bearing your name and bar number.
